How to buy USDT in Ethiopia with Birr
USDT is the easiest crypto to buy with Birr: it stays worth one US dollar, and on a P2P marketplace you pay a local seller directly from your own bank or Telebirr account.
What you need
Buying USDT with Birr takes about ten minutes the first time. You need:
- A free Collext account (email and password, then a code emailed to you).
- A Telebirr number or a bank account in your own name at CBE, Awash or Dashen. Payments must come from an account in your name, because that is what the seller and our verification match against.
- Birr to pay with. There is no minimum beyond what the seller's ad allows (most start at 1,000 ETB).
Step by step
- Open the marketplace, choose Buy, and pick the amount of USDT you want. The Birr amount is calculated from the seller's price.
- Pick a seller. Each ad shows the price per USDT, how much is available, the limits, the payment methods and the seller's completed trades.
- Place the order. The seller's USDT is locked in escrow immediately, so it can't be sold to someone else while you pay.
- Pay the seller from your own account: send exactly the amount shown to the seller's Telebirr number or bank account, then paste the Telebirr transaction ID or the bank receipt link.
- The payment is checked automatically (Telebirr and CBE, Awash and Dashen receipts). Once it matches, the USDT moves from escrow to your wallet, minus the platform fee.
How long does it take?
Telebirr payments are verified within minutes. Bank receipts are checked against the bank's own receipt page and usually clear in a few minutes too. Each order has a payment window chosen by the seller (15 to 60 minutes); if you need longer, you can ask the seller for more time from the order page.
What does it cost?
The price is set by the seller, so compare ads: the marketplace sorts the cheapest first. The platform fee is a small percentage taken from the USDT you receive and is shown before you place the order. There are no deposit fees, and paying the seller is a normal Telebirr or bank transfer.
Is it safe?
Escrow is what makes P2P safe: the seller's USDT is locked before you send a single Birr, and it is released only when the payment is verified or when support settles a dispute. Never pay outside the order, never release before the money is in your account if you are the seller, and keep the order chat for the conversation so support can see it.
